PVC / Cellular Vinyl
Fully synthetic, fully waterproofA rigid, closed-cell plastic milled to look like painted wood trim. Immune to rot, mold, and water damage, making it the standard for exterior trim and increasingly common indoors in bathrooms, basements, and mudrooms. It cuts and nails much like wood, but joints need PVC-rated cement rather than wood glue to bond properly.
Best for: bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, and exterior applications where moisture is a certainty, not a risk.Advantages
- Will not rot, swell, or support mold
- Unaffected by standing water
- Won't split when nailed near edges
- Low maintenance, easy to wipe clean
Disadvantages
- Expands and contracts noticeably with heat
- Requires PVC-rated cement at joints, not wood glue
- Can look slightly plastic up close
- Limited profile selection vs. wood
