PVC vs. Wood Baseboard
Last updated August 21, 2026. Waterproof synthetic trim vs. traditional wood — the deciding factor is almost always the room, not the look.
| PVC / Cellular Vinyl | Wood (solid or finger-jointed) | |
|---|---|---|
| Moisture resistance | Excellent — won't rot, swell, or mold | Poor — warps, swells, and can rot |
| Cost / linear ft | $2.00 – $5.00 | $1.00 – $6.00 |
| Finish | Paint only | Paint or stain (solid wood) |
| Cutting & joining | Standard tools; needs PVC-rated cement at joints | Standard tools; wood glue and finish nails |
| Thermal movement | Expands/contracts noticeably with heat | Moves with humidity, not heat |
| Profile selection | Narrower range than wood | Widest range, including ornate profiles |
| Best for | Bathrooms, basements, exteriors, mudrooms | Living areas, bedrooms, dining rooms |

The Rule of Thumb
Let the room decide
If a room has a shower, tub, exterior door, sump pump, or any regular chance of standing water, PVC is the safer material regardless of budget — wood and MDF both fail the same way once they get wet, and replacing baseboard is far cheaper than replacing it twice. For every other room, wood's wider profile selection, stain options, and lower entry cost usually win out. See room-specific picks: bathrooms, basements, and kitchens.
