Specifying commercial cove base
Commercial cove base is chosen on four axes: material, height, format, and corner method. Get those right and the rest of the spec follows.
Rubber vs. vinyl (TPR)
Rubber Cove Base
Vulcanized or thermoset rubber. The higher-durability option — resists indentation, holds color under UV and chemical exposure, and stays flexible in cold storage or loading areas. Standard spec for healthcare, schools, and transit.
Vinyl / TPR Cove Base
Thermoplastic rubber or PVC-based. Less expensive and easier to install with heat-formed corners, but softer — more prone to denting and to becoming brittle in cold, unconditioned spaces over time.
2½″, 4″, and 6″

Coil vs. premeasured stick
100 ft Coil
Continuous roll, uncoiled and cut on site. Minimizes seams on long, straight runs and is the only practical option for curved or radius walls.
Advantages
- Fewest seams on long runs
- Handles curved walls
- Less material waste on large jobs
Disadvantages
- Needs a coil former/heat gun for tight corners
- Slower to install on short, cut-up rooms
48″ Premeasured Stick
Straight, pre-cut lengths. Faster to handle and cut for rooms with many short walls and corners, at the cost of more visible seams.
Advantages
- Fast to cut and install
- No coil memory/curl to fight
- Ideal for small, corner-heavy rooms
Disadvantages
- More seams on long walls
- Impractical on curved walls
Preformed vs. field-formed

Matching adhesive to substrate
Cove base adhesive
Purpose-made acrylic adhesive, trowel- or brush-applied. The standard choice for drywall and painted concrete.
Contact cement
Instant bond, no clamping time. Preferred on metal, tile, or glossy surfaces standard adhesive won't grip.
Pressure-sensitive tape
Pre-applied adhesive strip on the back of the base. Fastest install, but a weaker long-term bond on uneven walls.
