How to Cope Inside Baseboard Corners

Last updated August 21, 2026. The technique that separates a tight, permanent inside corner from one that gaps open in a year — explained in full.

Why Cope, Not Miter

Inside corners move — coping accounts for it

A mitered inside corner is two pieces cut at matching 45° angles that meet in a point — clean when it's cut, but it relies on the wall staying at a perfect 90°. Walls rarely do; framing settles, drywall mud rounds the corner slightly, and a mitered joint opens into a visible gap within months. A coped joint instead butts one piece square into the corner and shapes the second piece to follow the exact profile of the first, so the two faces interlock regardless of the wall's actual angle. It costs a few extra minutes per corner and is the single biggest quality difference between an amateur and professional-looking install.

Cut the first piece square

Cut the first piece of baseboard with a plain 90° square end and set it into the corner, tight against the wall. This piece doesn't get coped — it just butts into the corner as-is.

Back-cut the second piece at 45°

Set the second piece in the miter saw as if you were cutting a standard inside miter — a 45° angle cutting back into the material. Don't install it yet; this cut is just there to expose the profile.

Tip: this is the same cut angle used for an inside miter, but the piece is never installed at this angle — it's just a guide line for the next step.

Follow the profile line with a coping saw

The 45° cut exposes the exact silhouette of the molding's face profile along the cut edge. Angle the coping saw blade back an extra 5°–10° beyond that line and cut along the profile outline, removing the back-angled waste material as you go.

Tip: the extra back-angle means only the front edge of the profile makes contact when installed — it fits tighter than a coped cut sanded flat and square.

Test-fit and refine with a file

Hold the coped piece up against the face of the first board. Look for high spots keeping the profiles from meeting cleanly, and remove them gradually with a round or half-round file — small passes, checking fit often.

Install once the fit is tight

Once the coped profile sits flush against the first piece with no visible gap, nail both pieces into studs as usual. A properly coped joint stays tight even as the house settles further — no caulk needed to hide the seam.

Common Mistakes

What goes wrong

Cutting square, not back-angled

A coping saw cut straight down the profile line, with no back-angle, leaves the back of the profile making contact instead of just the front edge — harder to seat tight.

Rushing the file work

Most gapped coped joints aren't a bad saw cut — they're a fit that was never fine-tuned with a file after the initial cut.

Coping outside corners

Outside corners should always be mitered, not coped — coping only solves the inside-corner problem.
