MDF Baseboard
Medium-density fiberboard — the smoothest, most affordable painted finish available, and the default choice in new construction. Not for wet rooms.
MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard)
The standard residential baseboard todayEngineered from compressed wood fibers and resin, MDF is dense, uniform, and free of knots or grain — which makes it the smoothest, most consistent surface for a painted finish. It's the default choice builders use in new construction and most home-center trim. Because it has no grain direction, it cuts and copes cleanly in any direction without tear-out.
Best for: whole-house painted trim packages where budget and a flawless painted finish matter more than moisture resistance.Advantages
- Lowest cost per linear foot
- No grain, knots, or warping
- Smoothest possible painted finish
- Widely available, easy to source
Disadvantages
- Swells and crumbles if it gets wet
- Heavier and duller to cut than wood
- Cut ends must be sealed/primed before install
- Chips more easily than solid wood
